Opening Session of the 45th ISICEM

  • Tue, 17 Mar 2026

During the opening session of the 45th ISICEM in Brussels, Prof Fabio S Taccone welcomed all participants. He talked about how ISICEM began with just 200 participants in a single university lecture hall and has now grown into one of the largest and most influential events in critical care, featuring multiple simultaneous sessions across eight conference rooms and five demo areas.

Every day, in ICUs and emergency departments around the world, dedicated professionals work at the intersection of science, urgency, and humanity. The ISICEM meeting offers an opportunity to reflect on the roles and responsibilities of these professionals, strengthen their knowledge and skills, and renew their commitment to delivering the highest standard of patient care.

Prof Taccone provided an overview of the meeting over the next four days and how it would explore the latest advances shaping this field. The pace of innovation has been remarkable, from new diagnostic strategies and organ support techniques to the expanding role of artificial intelligence and lessons learned from global health crises. The ISICEM programme was designed to reflect both the breadth and depth of today’s challenges. Importantly, innovation requires questioning long-standing assumptions. This was also the focus of the Round Table discussions, where common misconceptions were examined and emerging evidence was considered in how it is reshaping clinical practice.

Prof Taccone also talked about the pressures facing healthcare systems worldwide. Workforce shortages, ageing populations, ongoing conflicts, and the emotional demands of caring for critically ill patients affect almost every healthcare system today. This meeting is not only a forum for learning, but also a space to reflect on resilience, teamwork, and the values that sustain it. The well-being of healthcare professionals is inseparable from the quality of care we provide, and it deserves full attention.

ISICEM brings together colleagues from diverse countries, disciplines, and professional roles. This exchange of ideas across borders is central to progress in critical care. Whether you are a physician, nurse, paramedic, physiotherapist, researcher, or industry partner, your perspective enriches our shared understanding. Prof Taccone encouraged them to make the most of every opportunity for dialogue, during sessions, in the exhibition area, and in the informal conversations that often spark meaningful collaboration.

He also expressed thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this meeting possible. The scientific and organising committees have devoted countless hours to developing the programme. The faculty has generously shared their expertise. The sponsors have supported the event with a shared commitment to advancing patient care. He also thanked the manager and her team, whose professionalism and meticulous coordination and all the participants for being there, particularly in light of current geopolitical challenges that have made travel difficult for many.

In addition to lectures from internationally recognised leaders, the ISICEM programme includes pro–con debates, tutorials, practical demonstrations, meet-the-expert sessions, round tables, case discussions, and immersive simulations, creating a dynamic and clinically focused learning experience.

Prof Taccone hoped that over the coming days, the participants would be challenged, inspired, and energised and may encounter ideas that reshape their thinking, techniques that enhance their practice, and colleagues who become long-term collaborators and friends. He concluded with the hope that the attendees will leave with a renewed sense of purpose, confidence in their collective progress, and a strong connection to the global community working together to advance intensive care and emergency medicine.
