How can a smartphone be used for haemodynamic monitoring?
The parameters of the Capstesia app are described.
After taking a photo of the arterial waveform on the monitor screen, and cropping it to the signal of interest, the picture is sent to the Capstesia server via a mobile Internet connection. The heart rate and systolic and diastolic arterial pressures are manually entered into the app to determine the cardiac output (CO). After a few seconds, the PPV and CO values (...

Study: sepsis-induced DIC associated with high mortality
Researchers in Japan conducted a multicentre retrospective observational study to investigate the epidemiology of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in patients with sepsis. They found that patients with DIC diagnosed by two consensus criteria had higher severity and in-hospital mortality than patients without DIC.
The study results confirm the previous findings that, using consensus criteria, DIC is a com...

Alleviating inflammation: new inhibitor could treat ARDS in future
A newly discovered OGG1 inhibitor has been found to decrease lung inflammation in mice and could in future treat acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and autoimmune diseases.
The six-year study, by an international team of researchers, is published in Science. The research shows that the OGG1 protein, which is involved in repairing oxidated DNA, signals inflammation. The researchers set out t...
