Retrospective analysis of suspiciously timeless citations<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alejandro D\u00edez-Vidal<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2609-2559\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>, Jose R Arribas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>BMJ<\/em>\u00a02025;\u00a0391\u00a0doi:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj-2025-086941\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj-2025-086941<\/a>\u00a0(Published 11 December 2025)Cite this as:\u00a0<em>BMJ<\/em>\u00a02025;391:e086941<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abstract<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"p-2\"><strong>Objective<\/strong>&nbsp;To quantify the time lag between biomedical articles and the studies they describe as \u201crecent,\u201d a term widely used to imply timeliness despite rarely reflecting the actual age of the cited evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"p-3\"><strong>Design<\/strong>&nbsp;Retrospective analysis of suspiciously timeless citations based on a structured PubMed search of 20 predefined \u201crecent\u201d expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"p-4\"><strong>Sample<\/strong>&nbsp;1000 English language, full text biomedical articles in which a \u201crecent\u201d expression is directly linked to a citation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"p-5\"><strong>Main outcome measure<\/strong>&nbsp;Time lag in years between citing articles and their referenced \u201crecent\u201d studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"p-6\"><strong>Results<\/strong>\u00a0The age of the cited \u201crecent\u201d studies varied widely. The citation lag ranged from 0 to 37 years (mean 5.53 years, median 4 years, interquartile range 2-7). The most frequent lag was one year (n=159, 15.9%), and 177 references (17.7%) were at least 10 years old. Citation patterns varied across medical specialties: critical care, infectious diseases, genetics, immunology, and radiology showed shorter median lags (around two years), while nephrology, veterinary medicine, and dentistry displayed substantially longer lags (ranging from 8.5 to 14 years). Among expressions, \u201crecent approach,\u201d \u201crecent discovery,\u201d and \u201crecent study\u201d were linked to older references, whereas \u201crecent publication\u201d and \u201crecent article\u201d had much fresher citations. The citation lag was similar across world regions and gradually decreased over time, with the most recent publications showing the shortest lags. Journals with high impact factors (\u226512) cited more up-to-date work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a
