In particular those patients with severe lung diseases (e.g. ARDS) who can no longer be supported with conventional ventilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its unique p-BLV<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0mode has become an established value in many Intensive Care Units in Austrian and German hospitals. And when severe multi-trauma patients are admitted the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0ICU often proves to be an effective last resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the start of the pandemic the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0ICU has become an invaluable asset in the fight against Covid-19. Prof. Dr. Thomas Uhlig, Clinic director and head of the ICU at the L\u00fcdenscheid Clinic, Germany, explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0ICU such an important asset in the fight against Covid-19?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe ventilate all Covid-19 patients which require intubation with the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0ICU first, until we see a clear improvement of the oxygenation, because p-BLV<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0is much more efficient at recruiting lung volumes than other ventilation methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypercapnia is another problem we are faced with after non-invasive ventilation. With p-BLV<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0we can kill two birds with one stone. Its combination of high-frequency ventilation (improved oxygenation) and low-frequency ventilation (efficient CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0elimination) makes it our most effective ventilation method for this type of patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How long are Covid-19 patients usually ventilated by the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae\u00a0<\/sup>ICU?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs soon as the PaO<sub>2<\/sub>\/FiO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0ratio and airway pressures are again within a tolerable range, a conventional ventilator can take over. But if there is an acute deterioration, we ventilate with the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0ICU again. Our average patient is ventilated for around 14 days, of which on average around 5-7 days with the TwinStream<sup>\u00ae\u00a0<\/sup>ICU.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How old are the Covid-19 patients which you have ventilated so far?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince April we have ventilated Covid-19 patients between the ages of 20 and 85.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csccm.org.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-01-at-17.16.40.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/csccm.org.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-01-at-17.16.40-1024x543.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19902\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csccm.org.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-01-at-171.17.22.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/csccm.org.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-01-at-171.17.22-1024x760.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19903\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW TO VENTILATE COVID-19 PATIENTS?
